I often find it strange the the food operators who receive the most abuse from the general public are also the ones who are trying their hardest in many cases to cure dietary problems. Make a reservation at your favourite restaurant and try to follow a healthy diet and in most cases it’s almost impossible. There is generally nothing on the menu that could be considered healthy in any shape or form and just try asking for the fish to come without the sauce or be grilled without any butter or oil and you’ll get a withering look from your waitroid , a shrug of the shoulders, toss of the hair and an exasperated ” Well I’ll see if the chef can do it ! “
You’re damn right you’ll see if the chef can do it because at these prices I demand that the chef can do it. I’m not interested in being part of his great social experiment, coasting with him on the cutting edge of culinary exploration, buying in to his philosophy of whatever the flavour of the month is. If the guys down the street can tell me what the nutritional breakdown of their burger and fries is @ R 20, you sure as hell better be able to do a lot better when you’reĀ squeezing me for R 100 per plate. It’s about time this bloody arrogance in fancy restaurants disappeared. Go into the average supermarket and we’re demanding to know where the food came from, are these Free Trade bananas, were any dolphins killed in catching these fish ? Go to the fast food joint and we demand low calorie soft drinks, reduced calorie meals, flame grilled chicken instead of deepfried but go into a larney restaurant, take out a mortgage on your meal, choke on the prices of a bottle of wine and you’ll put anything into your mouth without a second thought. It seems to me we’ve got our priorities all back the front !
